#OaklandUndivided distributes 25,000th Computer at Garfield Elementary School

On the one-year anniversary of school closures, #OaklandUndivided reached a major milestone of providing 25,000 permanent Chromebooks to Oakland public school students in need. According to our Tech Check Survey, when the campaign kicked-off last spring only 25% of our students were identified as being connected with a computer and/or having Internet access at home. Today, 97% percent of our students are now confirmed to be connected at home.

Mabell, a kindergartener at Garfield Elementary school was the recipient of the 25,000th Chromebook at her school’s device distribution event this past Tuesday. Her mother, Meybol Solis, spoke at the event, sharing what this opportunity has meant to her and her family:

“Me da mucho sentimiento saber que ellos están aquí para apoyarnos y... ayudar a nuestros estudiantes ayudar a mi hija a que salgan adelante. Realmente le agradezco mucho a Mrs. Arenas y al distrito y a todos ustedes por apoyarnos con la computadora, porque va a ser un gran impacto muy positivo para mi hija. Muchas gracias”

"It gives me a great feeling knowing that they are here to support us, to help our students, and help my daughter to succeed. I really thank Mrs. Arenas and the district and all of you for supporting us with the computer. It is going to be a very positive impact for my daughter. Thank you very much."

In the words of Mayor Libby Schaaf “This is the power of community.” Thank you to our founding partners, Oakland Public Education Fund, Oakland Promise, Oakland Unified School District, Tech Exchange, and Mayor Libby Schaaf --  and the many donors and supporters who have come together to ensure all of our students have the tools and resources they need to stay connected. As Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell said during the event “Let’s keep this equity party going.”
